Decatur Tribune: Councilman Brown hosts neighborhood cookout to hear concerns of residents
Decatur Tribune – Friday, June 18, 2010
Decatur City Councilman Adam Brown held a neighborhood cookout at Kiwanis Park on Thursday to give community members an opportunity to voice their thoughts and concerns about local issues. The event gave residents the chance to speak candidly about problems that are important to them, including education, local infrastructure, and corruption.
According to Brown, public safety is perhaps the most important issue to residents in Decatur’s West End, so in response to concern voiced by area residents, he invited a representative from the Decatur Police Department to speak about crime prevention and home safety tips.
“I hosted this event to bring Decatur city government closer to the people. For too long voters have been shut out of the political process. Neighborhood cookouts like this one give Decatur residents a chance to speak out on issues and let us know what’s important to them,” said Councilman Brown. “Here in the West End near Kiwanis Park, residents are very concerned about public safety, so I asked Chief Anderson to send a representative to talk about the police department’s strategy for combating increased crime. Folks in the neighborhood also got a chance to relay their concerns back to us.”
Brown has made public safety a hallmark of his tenure on the City Council by working closely with local, county, and state law enforcement. Public safety was a major concern of voters that Adam heard from during his campaign for City Council and continues to be a growing concern for all Decatur residents.
